UK autumn races worth a trip weekend

Not every UK race needs a hotel. Plenty are day trips: drive, park, run, go home. The ones below are different. They’re big enough, atmospheric enough, or far enough from home that treating them as a proper weekend — Friday travel, Saturday shakeout, Sunday race — usually makes the whole thing better.

Entry status and exact race Sundays change every year. Confirm both on the organiser’s site before you book trains or rooms.

AJ Bell Great North Run

When: September
Official site: greatrun.org/events/great-north-run

The world’s biggest half marathon, Newcastle to South Shields, and still the autumn event that feels like a regional festival as much as a race. Tens of thousands line up on the famous point-to-point route to the coast.

Entry is typically ballot-led for general places, with charity routes if you miss out. It’s not a pancake PB course — there are proper undulations — but as a destination weekend in the North East it’s hard to beat. Hotels in Newcastle fill early; South Shields works if you want finish-line proximity and a quieter base. If companions aren’t racing, things to do in Newcastle fill the Saturday easily.

See the Great North Run trip page for indicative weekend costs (rail/drive framing, not flights).

Windsor Half Marathon

When: late September
Official site: runwindsor.com

Start and finish on the Long Walk with Windsor Castle as the backdrop. The route runs through Windsor Great Park — scenic, traffic-light in places, and not flat. Organiser and runner notes consistently call out the hills; treat this as atmosphere and autumn parkland, not a PB hunt.

It’s an easy trip weekend from much of the South East and Midlands: Saturday in Windsor, Sunday race, home without a passport. Book accommodation early around the castle and station — race weekends thin the inventory fast.

Cardiff Half Marathon

When: October
Official site: cardiffhalfmarathon.co.uk

One of the UK’s best-supported halves: capital-city roads, a flat-and-fast reputation, and a field that still feels like a big day out rather than a local club race scaled up. The organiser pitches fast roads and strong crowd energy — fair for anyone who wants a time and a weekend in Cardiff.

Travel works well by rail from across England and Wales. Stay central if you want expo and start-line simplicity, and keep Saturday useful with city attractions rather than a taper panic. Trip notes and estimates: Cardiff Half Marathon.

Oxford Half Marathon

When: October
Official site: oxfordhalf.com

An autumn classic through historic Oxford — closed roads, city-centre character, and a route the organiser describes as fast and flat. Public entries often sell out; charity places and interest lists for the next edition are the usual fallback if you’re late.

As a trip weekend it punches above its weight: compact centre, easy rail access, and enough to do on Saturday — colleges, museums, and city tickets — that you don’t need a second city. Hotels fill around race weekend; book when the bib is confirmed. Confirm current entry options on the official site rather than third-party listings.

Altra Yorkshire Marathon

When: October
Official site: runforall.com — Yorkshire Marathon

York’s autumn marathon: University of York start/finish, a loop through the city and Vale of York countryside, and an organiser that calls the course flat and fast with strong on-course support. There’s often a festival feel (shorter distances and relay options the same weekend), which helps if travel companions aren’t running 26.2.

York is a natural overnight — East Coast Main Line from London in about two hours, plenty of hotels, and a city worth the Saturday even if you’re tapering hard (Minster and city extras beat sitting in the room). Event parking at the university is typically restricted; plan Park & Ride or rail as the organiser advises.

If you’re comparing two of these, price the whole weekend (travel, hotel, entry), not just the bib. For races we cover on Start Line Trips, the race pages above do that from a UK base — indicative numbers, not live quotes.
