The course
Starts and finishes near the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate on the Strasse des 17. Juni, looping through Mitte, Kreuzberg and Charlottenburg. A famously flat, wide, PB-friendly course with a triumphant sprint through the Brandenburg Gate.
Where to stay
Mitte puts you walking distance from the start and finish, while Charlottenburg and Prenzlauer Berg offer quieter, characterful bases on good transit lines.
Getting there
From Berlin Brandenburg (BER) take the FEX or regional train to Hauptbahnhof in about 30 minutes, then a short S-Bahn or walk to the start.
That weekend
Collect your bib at the BMW Berlin Marathon Expo, join a shakeout in the Tiergarten, then explore Museum Island, the East Side Gallery and the Reichstag dome.
Who it's for
Built for PB hunters and first-time majors who want a flat, wide, well-organised big-city course with a Brandenburg Gate finish. Suits UK runners happy with a short-haul weekend (BER is straightforward) who can handle September hotel demand. Less of a "party race" than London; more of a serious running festival. Ballot, charity, and tour routes fill early. If you only want scenery and wine stops, look at Médoc instead.
Sample 4-day trip
Arrive, explore, race, then head home. A proper weekend, not a rushed fly-by.
-
Day 1: Arrive
Fly into Berlin Brandenburg (BER). Public transport is excellent: the FEX Airport Express or regional trains reach Hauptbahnhof in about 30 minutes, then S-Bahn or U-Bahn to Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg. You do not need a private transfer for logistics alone, but it helps with kit bags, a late flight, or a group.
Check into Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg , walk off the flight, and keep dinner early and nearby. A big-city marathon weekend starts the moment you land, so protect your sleep.
-
Day 2: Shakedown Run and Explore the City
Bib collection at the BMW Berlin Marathon Expo is required the day before for most entrants, so allow proper time for queues and the merch hall. Pair it with an easy Tiergarten shakeout: flat paths, shade, and a short hop from many Mitte hotels.
Keep the rest of the day low-key. Museum Island exterior walks, a coffee in Prenzlauer Berg, or a Spree-side potter are enough. Grab city tickets only if you want something booked. Eat an early, carb-focused dinner, and pin the bib before bed.
-
Day 3: Race Day
The start is near the Tiergarten / Strasse des 17. Juni. From Mitte, many runners walk or take a short transit hop , so leave early. Majors mean security, bag drop, and crowded pens; arrive with time to spare.
Finish through the Brandenburg Gate, then shower and take it easy: Museum Island at a stroll, or a long lunch rather than more kilometres. Treat yourself somewhere neighbourhood and unfussy. Resting beats a tourist restaurant trek across town for more to see .
-
Day 4: Final Day
If the flight allows, Sunday brunch in Prenzlauer Berg or a look at the East Side Gallery / Reichstag dome (book ahead) makes the fourth day feel earned. FEX or regional train back to BER is straightforward. Give yourself margin after a marathon, or book a private transfer if you prefer.
Three nights covers expo day, race day, and a calm exit without limping through security on empty legs.
What drives the cost
Entry is one of the pricier majors on this site; hotels in Mitte on race weekend are the other big lever. Flights from the UK are usually the predictable part (short-haul). Three nights covers expo, race, and a calm exit. Book lodging early or shift to Charlottenburg/Kreuzberg on good U-Bahn lines to pull the total down. Activities are optional (Berlin is excellent on foot), so the calculator's activity line is the easiest place to save if the hotel quote shocks you.
