The route
The Boston Marathon is 42.2 km (26.2 miles) point-to-point from Main Street in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, to Boylston Street in Boston’s Back Bay (Copley Square). Net downhill on paper, then the Newton Hills and Heartbreak Hill before the city finish.
Start time
Patriots’ Day Monday. Wheelchair and handcycle divisions go first from about 09:00. Professional fields follow, then mass waves from roughly 10:00 through late morning (six waves in recent editions). Your bib names the wave and corral. Confirm times on the B.A.A. race-day page — they can shift.
Course elevation
Net downhill from Hopkinton (~475 ft) to Boylston (~16 ft), but not a PB factory. Early miles punish the quads; Newton Hills from about mile 16–21 end with Heartbreak Hill near mile 20–21. Roughly 800+ ft of climbing and more descent overall. GPS files vary; train for downhill control and late hills, not a Berlin profile.
Entry fee
Indicative entry is £290 per runner. Confirm the current bib price on the official site; ballot, charity, and tour prices can differ. International qualifier entry has recently been about $375 (roughly £290 on this page’s defaults) for US non-residents — confirm the current fee on baa.org. That is the bib only, not a hotel, flight, or charity pledge. Charity fundraising sits on top of registration.
Registration
No general lottery. Most runners need a Boston Qualifying (BQ) time for their age and gender on race day, then apply in Athletes’ Village during September registration week (for 2027: 14–18 September 2026). A BQ does not guarantee entry: the field is ranked by how far under the standard you ran, and recent cutoffs have been several minutes faster than the published times. New for 2027, a random selection pool may take about 1,000 near-miss qualifiers. Charity and official travel partners are the other paths. Confirm standards and windows on the B.A.A. Qualify page.
Where to stay
Stay near the finish and the Charles Street athlete buses, not in Hopkinton. Back Bay and Copley Square are closest to Boylston Street and the Hynes expo; Beacon Hill and Downtown trade a short walk for slightly more inventory. Fenway, the South End, and Cambridge (Red Line) can cut the nightly rate if you accept a T ride on race morning.
Getting there
Fly into Logan (BOS). Silver Line or Blue Line reaches downtown in about 20–40 minutes; a private transfer is easier with race kit or a late arrival. On race morning, official B.A.A. buses load on Charles Street by Boston Common / the Public Garden — that is your start logistics, not a drive to Hopkinton.
That weekend
Bib pickup at the Bank of America Boston Marathon Expo (Hynes Convention Center) — no race-day pickup. Saturday’s B.A.A. 5K and Sunday’s invitational mile add energy before Monday. Non-runners can use the T to Wellesley, Newton, or Kenmore while you are on course; agree a Boylston / Stuart Street meeting point before you board the bus.
Who it's for
For UK runners who have earned a BQ (or a charity/tour bib) and will take a long-haul flight for the prestige Monday Major — not for a flat PB. Ideal if you want Hopkinton-to-Boylston atmosphere, Newton Hills, and a Back Bay finish, and you can book four nights around jet lag. Partners do well with Freedom Trail and harbour days while you are on the bus. Skip it if you wanted Berlin-flat times, a Sunday race without extra leave, or a cheap European weekend.
Sample 4-day trip
Arrive, explore, race, then head home. A proper weekend, not a rushed fly-by.
-
Day 1: Arrive
Fly into Logan (BOS). The Silver Line or Blue Line reaches Back Bay and downtown in about 20–40 minutes. Public transport is fine for most arrivals; book a private transfer for late flights or heavy kit.
Check into Back Bay, Beacon Hill, or Fenway — somewhere walkable or a short T ride to Charles Street and Boylston Street. Keep the evening easy: this is a Monday race after a transatlantic flight, so four nights is the honest shape.
-
Day 2: Expo, Shakeout and Rest
Collect your bib at the Boston Marathon expo at Hynes on Boylston Street (Friday–Sunday in recent editions). There is no race-day pickup, so allow proper time for queues and the merch hall. Pair Saturday with an easy Charles or Common shakeout — keep it short.
Sunday is for feet-up: light city walking at most, early dinner, kit laid out. Book race-weekend restaurants now; Back Bay fills with runners. Patriots’ Day is Monday — protect the sleep.
-
Day 3: Race Day (Monday)
Patriots’ Day morning means the official B.A.A. buses from Charles Street to Hopkinton. Bring bib and clear gear-check bag only; use toilets before you board — there are none on the bus. Last buses leave mid-morning; do not cut it fine. Athletes’ Village is a long wait: throwaway layers, then the walk to Main Street.
Finish on Boylston Street in Back Bay. Cell service dies; agree a Stuart Street family-meeting letter before you start. Celebrate nearby and keep walking light. Partners can ride the T to a course spot earlier, then meet you after.
-
Day 4: Final Day
Recovery day. Brunch in the South End, a slow Common loop, or a harbour / Freedom Trail potter if legs allow. Four nights gives you a buffer before flying home after a Monday marathon.
Back to Logan on the Silver Line or Blue Line , with generous margin, or a private transfer if stairs and kit feel like too much.
What drives the cost
The flight and Back Bay hotels dominate a UK trip, not the international bib. Marathon weekend rooms near Copley routinely spike; book the week your qualifier acceptance or charity bib confirms, or shift to Fenway, South End, or Cambridge on the T. Four nights is the calculator’s shape so jet lag and a Monday race have room. The total does not include a charity fundraising pledge. This is a DIY weekend cost, not a travel package — UK operators sell Boston packages with Hopkinton coaches if you want logistics bundled, usually at a premium to flights plus a Back Bay hotel yourself.
