The Porto Marathon does not start in the Porto on the postcards. The start is beside SEA LIFE Porto at Castelo do Queijo, on the Atlantic where Porto meets Matosinhos. The finish is close by at the Queimódromo in Parque da Cidade. Ribeira, the riverside old town most people picture when they book Porto, is about 7 km away.
That gap is the whole hotel question. The 2026 race is Sunday 8 November at 08:00 (official rules), and the marathon and 10K sold out on 21 September — the earliest they ever have, according to the organiser, Runporto. If you have a place, you have four weeks to choose between an easy race morning and an easy rest of the weekend.
Where to stay, at a glance
| Area | Getting to the start | Getting back from the finish | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matosinhos | 20 minute walk from Matosinhos Sul (Metro line A) | Walk back along the seafront | An easy race morning, the beach, seafood |
| Foz do Douro / Nevogilde | Walk | Walk | The shortest race morning; quiet, upmarket streets |
| Boavista | Metro line A from Casa da Música, then the walk | The same in reverse | A middle point between the start and the expo |
| Ribeira / Baixa | Metro from Trindade or Bolhão, then the walk | The same in reverse | First visits, the expo, sightseeing |
| Vila Nova de Gaia | Metro over the river, a change at Trindade, then the walk | The same in reverse | Supporters and port lodges |
Matosinhos: the runner’s pick
Matosinhos is the town immediately north of the start. Its beach runs down towards Castelo do Queijo, and Matosinhos Sul Metro station is about 20 minutes’ walk from the start area. On race morning that walk is your warm-up, with the seafront roads closed or restricted for the race.
It also gets the rest of the weekend right. Matosinhos is known for its seafood restaurants, there is a beach for a Saturday shakeout, and line A takes you into the centre for the expo in about half an hour. From the airport, take line E (violet) and change to line A at Senhora da Hora.
The official partner hotel here is the Four Points by Sheraton Matosinhos, 200 metres from Matosinhos beach, from €163 a night for a single room through the race’s travel agency. Read the small print. Unlike the other partner hotels, its package does not include transport to the start or from the finish, and late checkout costs extra (official hotel page). Compare it with Matosinhos hotels booked yourself.
Foz do Douro and Nevogilde: closest to the start
Foz is where the Douro meets the Atlantic, and Nevogilde is the residential district behind the beaches running up to Castelo do Queijo. Stay here and you walk to the start, walk to the bag drop, and walk home from the finish.
The catch is supply. This is a quiet, mostly residential part of the city with few big hotels, so expect guesthouses, small boutique hotels, and apartments. If you find a room within walking distance of Castelo do Queijo for a sensible price, take it.
Boavista: between the start and the city
Avenida da Boavista is Porto’s longest avenue, about 5.5 km. It runs in a straight line past the Casa da Música roundabout to the sea at Castelo do Queijo, where the start is. It is lined with offices and hotels, so there are plenty of rooms outside the old town.
Do not plan to walk to the start from the eastern end of the avenue. The official Hotel Portus Cale (Quality Inn), at Avenida da Boavista 1060, is near Casa da Música and about 4.5 km from the start. Line A runs direct from Casa da Música to Matosinhos Sul. The partner package, from €131 a night for a single room, includes transport to the start and back from the finish.
Ribeira and Baixa: best weekend, longest race morning
If this is your first time in Porto, the old town is hard to resist. The expo is at the Alfândega congress centre on the riverside, so bib collection is a walk. The Saturday pasta party is there too, from 12:00 to 16:00, at €6 for runners and €9 for the public (official information).
Race morning is the price you pay. In 2025, the city suspended bus stops, the tram line, and taxi ranks on the streets of the course until the race ended. Roads around Castelo do Queijo were fully closed from midnight (JN). Bus 500, the usual riverside and seafront route, is no help. Instead, take line A from Trindade or Bolhão to Matosinhos Sul (about half an hour), then walk 20 minutes to the start.
Sunday trains start around 06:00 and run every 15–20 minutes early in the morning (Metro do Porto timetables). For an 08:00 start, aim to be on a train by about 06:30. Ribeira and Baixa hotels still make sense if the city matters more to you than a lie-in.
Vila Nova de Gaia: for supporters
Gaia is across the Douro from Ribeira, home to the port lodges and the views back across the river to the old town. The organiser says the 2026 course returns to all three cities — Porto, Gaia, and Matosinhos — so Gaia sees the race too.
For the runner, it is the furthest base from the start. You cross the river on line D, change to line A at Trindade, ride out to Matosinhos Sul, and walk. If your group is splitting rooms, put the supporters here and the runner on the coast.
How many nights?
Three is right for most UK runners. Kit collection is only on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 November, 10:00–19:00, and you need your registration confirmation and ID. Someone else can collect for you with your confirmation and your ID number.
- Arrive Friday, fly home Monday. Expo on Friday or Saturday morning, a quiet Saturday afternoon, and no rush to the airport after the race.
- Arrive Saturday morning only if your flight leaves plenty of time before the expo closes at 19:00. A long delay can cost you your bib.
- Keep Sunday night. The time limit is six hours, with a 14:00 finish deadline. Standard checkout is usually before you are back from the finish. The partner packages include checkout until 14:00 (extra at Four Points).
Flights to Porto (OPO) land about 30 minutes from the centre on Metro line E. A private transfer only earns its cost for a late arrival or a group.
What the weekend costs
Our Porto Marathon trip page uses an indicative £69 entry (the €80 final price tier, before admin fees), £80 a night, and an £85 return flight. Many runners paid less for entry: it was €65 until 31 March and €70 until 31 August.
| Scenario | What we are counting | Indicative total |
|---|---|---|
| Two nights, booked yourself | £69 + 2 × £80 + £85 | About £315 |
| Three nights, booked yourself (calculator default) | £69 + 3 × £80 + £85 | About £395 |
| Official package, single room: Star Inn Porto | £69 + 3 × about £86 (€100) + £85 | About £410 |
| Official package, single room: Portus Cale | £69 + 3 × about £112 (€131) + £85 | About £490 |
| Official package, single room: Four Points Matosinhos | £69 + 3 × about £140 (€163) + £85 | About £575 |
The official rates are per room per night, with breakfast and tourist tax included. The “from” prices are single rooms. Doubles are €134 at Star Inn, €167 at Portus Cale, and €180 at Four Points, so two runners sharing pay less each. Race-day breakfast starts at 06:30, which works with the included transport. If you are taking the Metro from the centre instead, eat earlier.
The packages are sold by Club-Tour, the organiser’s official travel agency, at [email protected]. They are only available to runners whose entry is paid and confirmed. On 9 October, the online booking form showed no rooms available at any of the three hotels, so email to ask about cancellations rather than counting on one. We do not sell packages. Price them against your own hotel booking before you choose.
Didn’t get a place?
The marathon and the EDP 10K are sold out. Under the 2026 rules, transfers to another runner closed on 8 October. When the organiser announced the sell-out, the Mimosa APO 6K walk or run still had places until it reached its limit.
The official information page lists a €100 “last minute” marathon price at the expo. With the race sold out, do not book a trip around it. Email [email protected] before you buy anything.
For 2027, watch the organiser’s site after this year’s race. The 2026 edition opened with a €42.50 Christmas offer that ran until 31 December 2025; those entries could not be transferred or cancelled. If you want winter sun in a flat Iberian marathon, look at Seville in February, and there is the Lisbon Half in March.
The traps
Booking Gaia or Ribeira for the view, then finding out where the start is. Both are good weekends and long race mornings. Decide which matters more before you pay.
Counting on a taxi to the start line. In 2025 the roads at Castelo do Queijo were fully closed from midnight. A taxi can only drop you outside the closures, and the ranks on the course are suspended.
Turning up on Sunday for your bib. The organiser says no kits are handed out outside the two expo days.
Assuming every package includes transport. Four Points Matosinhos does not, and its late checkout is extra.
A tight Sunday flight home. With a 14:00 finish deadline, a bag to collect, and a Metro back, a Sunday evening flight is a gamble. Monday is calmer.
What to do next
- Got a place? Book a free-cancellation room in Matosinhos, Foz, or Boavista, or the old town if the weekend matters more than race morning.
- Want a package? Email Club-Tour with your confirmed entry to ask about availability, and compare it with a DIY booking.
- Set your nights on the Porto Marathon trip page to see the indicative total for your trip.
- Plan race morning in the week before. Check the Metro timetable for your station and the city’s road closures, which are published shortly before the race.
First marathon abroad? Our first overseas marathon guide covers the planning timeline, and the Seville Marathon hotels guide does the same job for February.
