Chicago Marathon cost from the UK (2027 entry)

The Chicago Marathon bib is the cheap part. The trip is a long-haul October weekend in the Loop, and that is where UK runners feel the number.

For 2027 the organisers charge $260 for non-U.S. residents and $250 for U.S. residents, plus a non-refundable processing fee (official 2027 apply page; announcement, 15 September 2026). None of that covers an O’Hare flight, a Grant Park hotel on marathon weekend, an ESTA for British passport holders, or a fundraising pledge if you take a charity place.

What “Chicago Marathon cost” actually includes

Three different questions hide inside that search.

1. What do I pay the organisers or the charity? A drawing (Chicago’s name for its ballot) or time-qualifier place is the entry fee. A charity place is the charity entry fee plus the pledge. A tour operator place is whatever the package costs.
2. What does it cost to be in Chicago that weekend? Long-haul flights, hotels, food, the CTA, the ESTA, and maybe an architecture cruise for whoever is not racing.
3. How much cash does a charity place need? The pledge is money you have to raise or cover yourself. It does not replace the flight or the hotel.

We answer (1) and (2) with indicative figures. (3) belongs to the charity you sign with.

How to get a 2027 place

The drawing and the guaranteed routes for qualifiers and returning runners only accept applications between 8 and 29 October. Charity teams and official tour operators keep selling places for months afterwards, until their allocations run out.

Time-qualifier standards are based on your age on race day (10 October 2027). For 16–34 they are 2:50:00 for men and 3:20:00 for women and non-binary runners; for 40–44 they are 3:00:00 and 3:30:00. Only a full marathon on a course certified by World Athletics, USATF, or a similar body counts — a half marathon or a 50K does not. Approved guaranteed entries must pay by 10 November, so qualifiers know where they stand a month before the drawing.

The organisers set a $2,500 fundraising minimum for 2027. Some teams go higher: the American Cancer Society asks $2,620, while the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation sits at the $2,500 floor. Runners outside the U.S. can also go through realbuzz, the organisers’ partner for international charities. Miss the fundraising deadline and many charities charge the shortfall to your card.

Chicago does not take the entry fee when you apply. You pay after you are approved or drawn, and an unpaid place is forfeited — so watch your inbox on 8 December.

What the weekend costs from the UK

Chicago is a long-haul Major with a simple race morning. There is no coach out of town like Boston and no ferry to Staten Island like New York: you walk to Grant Park from the Loop. The bib is the scarce line. The O’Hare fare and the October hotel rate are the ones that move.

Our Chicago Marathon estimate uses an indicative £200 bib, £200 a night, and £460 return flights. From O’Hare, the CTA Blue Line reaches the Loop in about 45 minutes. Midway also works if the fare is better. A private transfer is worth it after an eight-to-nine-hour flight with kit, or after the race when stairs become personal.

Add an ESTA for British passport holders under the Visa Waiver Program. The official fee is $40.27 USD at the time of writing. The U.S. adjusts it for inflation every fiscal year, so confirm the live amount before you pay.

Chicago is six hours behind the UK in October. Four nights leaves room to adjust, collect your bib, and still get a recovery day before the flight home.

The Loop and South Loop put you closest to the Grant Park start and finish. River North adds restaurants a short walk or train hop away. West Loop and hotels on the Blue or Red Line can cut the nightly rate if you accept a train in on race morning. Some charity teams also offer hotel room blocks, so ask before you book separately.

October is usually mild — our climate data puts average highs around 17°C and lows around 8°C — but the wind off the lake can decide the last 10K. Pack for a cold corral and a warmer finish.

Chicago vs other Majors from the UK

If the real question is “which World Marathon Major can I afford from the UK”, Chicago sits in the middle of the long-hauls. It is dearer than Tokyo or Cape Town on our defaults, cheaper than New York or Boston.

Flat-course shoppers usually weigh Chicago against Berlin. Berlin is the cheaper short-haul PB; Chicago is the American Major without Boston’s qualifying time or New York’s bridge climbs.

The traps that inflate the number

Booking before 8 December. The drawing only tells you in December. A “free cancellation” room is fine; a non-refundable Loop hotel or a flight bought in October is a bet on the drawing.

Two nights after a transatlantic flight. Chicago is six hours behind. Land on Friday, queue at McCormick Place on Saturday, and you line up at 07:30 on Sunday with your body clock still on UK time. The extra night costs less than the race it saves.

Assuming the bib is the whole trip. $260 is real. So is £800 of hotel on our four-night default, plus the long-haul and the ESTA.

Underestimating the charity pledge. At least $2,500 sits on top of a $335 charity entry. That is more than the whole DIY trip on our defaults.

The Distance Series as a “free” route. Finishing the Shamrock Shuffle (21 March 2027), Chicago 13.1 (6 June 2027), and the 2027 marathon guarantees a place in the 50th race in 2028. From the UK that is three transatlantic trips. Count them before you call it cheaper than charity.

Tour-operator certainty tax. Official tour operators exist for a reason. Run the DIY total on the trip page — flights, hotels, and nights — before you buy a bundle because the drawing said no.

Running on 11 October 2026?

What to do next

1. Apply between 8 and 29 October on chicagomarathon.com — drawing, time qualifier, or another guaranteed route.
2. Decide your fallback now. If you want certainty, contact a charity or realbuzz before their places go.
3. Wait for 8 December, then pay by 15 December. Then open the Chicago Marathon trip page, set your nights, price Loop or South Loop hotels, and lock flights into O’Hare against that total.
