Short-haul Majors use three nights (expo + race + buffer). Long-haul Majors use four so jet lag has room. Change nights and airports on each race page — your itinerary will not match the defaults exactly.

What actually moves the total
Flights beat entry fees on long-haul Majors
Berlin’s bib (£155) is higher than London’s (£80). The DIY weekends still land in the same band because UK–BER is a short hop. Sydney’s bib (~£165 / AUD 330 international) looks modest until UK–SYD at ~£950 sits on top of four harbour nights.
Rule of thumb from our defaults: once you leave Europe, the flight is usually larger than the bib — often larger than the hotel line too, depending on the city.
Hotels decide the US Majors
Chicago, New York, and Boston do not lose to Europe on entry alone. They lose on Loop, Midtown, and Back Bay rooms on race weekend. Shift neighbourhoods (South Loop, Queens/Brooklyn with a solid subway plan, Fenway or Cambridge) and the total moves more than shaving £20 off the bib.
Nights are a logistics choice, not a luxury tax
Three nights on a European Major covers expo day without a 04:00 alarm. Four nights on a long-haul Major is the calculator’s shape so you are not racing 36 hours after landing. Cutting to two nights rarely “saves” money if you miss packet pickup or start on empty sleep.
Charity is a different product
Our ranking assumes a ballot, lottery, or qualifier bib with no fundraising floor. Charity London (£2,500–£2,800 pledges on pages we checked), charity New York (often $3,000–$4,000+), and charity Berlin (£850–£2,000) sit on top of registration and the weekend. Tour packages buy certainty the same way — price them against the DIY calculator before you assume they are cheaper.
Cheap band: London and Berlin (~£600)
London Marathon — easiest trip, hardest lottery

No passport. Brutal ballot. Charity and Good For Age are how many UK runners actually get in. If you travel into London, central hotels on Double weekend (2027 spans two race days) are the swing factor — not the ~£50–£80 ballot bib.

Berlin Marathon — short-haul Major, PB reputation
Indicative DIY: ~£605 (3 nights) · When: late September · Travel: BER
Flat course, September hotels in Mitte, and a European flight that usually stays predictable. The 2026 participation fee is €205 (~£155 on our defaults). Charity pledges are real but typically gentler than London’s.

Mid band: Cape Town and Tokyo (~£1,200–£1,350)
Cape Town Marathon — long-haul flight, softer ground costs
Indicative DIY: ~£1,210 (4 nights) · When: May (Major edition from 2027) · Travel: CPT
Africa’s first World Marathon Major. The flight dominates; Green Point / City Bowl hotels and meals often undercut New York or Tokyo once you are on the ground. Not a Six Star race — still a Major on the Abbott calendar.

Tokyo Marathon — jet-lag Major with orderly costs

Chicago Marathon — flat US Major, Loop hotels
Indicative DIY: ~£1,460 (4 nights) · When: October · Travel: ORD
International bib recently about $260 (~£200). O’Hare and Grant Park–adjacent rooms do the rest. Flat-course shoppers often weigh Chicago against Berlin; US Major shoppers compare it with Boston and New York.

New York City Marathon — five boroughs, Midtown prices
Indicative DIY: ~£1,600 (4 nights) · When: early November · Travel: JFK
International base registration recently about $358 (~£270 on our defaults). The weekend is a long-haul November stay in Manhattan — and that is where the number lives. Charity floors often sit at several thousand dollars (or pounds) on top.

Boston Marathon — Monday race, Back Bay spike
Indicative DIY: ~£1,685 (4 nights) · When: Patriots’ Day Monday · Travel: BOS
Accepted qualifier entry for 2027 is $270 (~£205 on our defaults) — confirm on baa.org. Charity registration has recently been about $375, plus fundraising. The course is Hopkinton to Boylston; the budget is Logan plus Back Bay on a Monday that does not match a normal UK weekend. Four nights covers jet lag and the coach-to-start morning better than a smash-and-grab.

Sydney Marathon — flight-heavy seventh Major
Indicative DIY: ~£1,715 (4 nights) · When: August · Travel: SYD
Joined the Abbott series in 2025. Not a Six Star race. International ballot entry is AUD 330 (~£165 on our defaults). The UK–Australia fare is the shock line; Circular Quay hotels sit at the expensive end of the harbour. Stay further from the Opera House finish if the quote is the problem.

None of this is “buy the cheapest and you are done.” Ballot odds, BQ cutoffs, and charity floors decide whether the DIY total is even available to you.
The traps that inflate a Majors trip
Hotels before the bib. Lottery results and qualifier acceptances arrive months after you apply. Paying for race-weekend rooms early and then missing the draw is an expensive non-race.
Comparing bibs instead of weekends. A £80 London ballot and a £270 New York international fee are not the same conversation once hotels and flights land.
Treating charity as the DIY total. Fundraising pledges belong to the charity you sign with. They do not replace flights or hotels — they sit on top.
Two nights on a long-haul. Packet pickup windows are unforgiving on several Majors (Tokyo and New York among them). Miss the expo and you do not start.
Tour-operator certainty tax without a DIY check. Packages exist for a reason. Run the race-page calculator with your nights and rooms before you assume the bundle is cheaper.

On our defaults, Sydney (£1,715), then Boston (£1,685) and New York (~£1,600). Charity paths can put any Major above those DIY totals.
Do Sydney and Cape Town count for the Six Star medal?

Should I budget the same for every Major?
No. Treat Europe and long-haul as different products. Add ESTA / visa costs for the US, and leave buffer for food and local transport — those lines are outside the calculator defaults.
