The New York City Marathon bib is a Major entry fee. The trip is a long-haul November weekend in Manhattan — and that is where UK runners usually feel the number.
For 2026, Official Charity Partners quoting New York Road Runners fees list $255 for NYRR members, $315 for U.S. non-members, and $358 for non-U.S. residents (example: The Pink Agenda). Treat those as the published base registration lines — the NYRR checkout can add processing, so the card charge may land a little higher. None of that includes a Midtown hotel, a flight into JFK, an ESTA for British passport holders, or a fundraising pledge if you take a charity route.
This page splits those paths. Confirm the current edition on nyrr.org/tcsnycmarathon before you pay anyone. Fees, pledges, and hotel rates move. 2027 lottery dates and published fees are still TBA.

What “NYC Marathon cost” actually includes
Three different questions get stuffed into one search.
- What do I pay NYRR / the charity? Lottery or time-qualifier place: the registration fee (international rate above). Charity: registration fee plus the pledge. Official International Tour Operator: whatever that package lists.
- What do you pay to be in New York that weekend? Long-haul flights (or EWR / LGA), hotels, food, subway/AirTrain, ESTA, maybe Top of the Rock or a Broadway ticket for whoever is not racing.
- What does a charity place cost in cash you have to find? The pledge is real money you have to raise or cover — often charged to your card if you fall short. It does not replace the flight or the hotel.
We only answer (1) and (2) with indicative figures. (3) belongs to the charity you sign with.
The 2026 non-guaranteed general entry drawing ran 4–25 February and selected on 4 March. That window is closed. Remaining 2026 paths (where still open) are charity partners, Official International Tour Operators, and any NYRR guaranteed programmes you already qualify for. For 2027, expect a fresh drawing window, charity partners announced in spring 2027, and tour operators announced early 2027 — confirm on nyrr.org. Do not price a November hotel until the bib is real.

Applying to the drawing authorises NYRR to charge the full fee if you are selected. There is no polite “are you still in?” email first.
A tour package can look “all-in” until you compare it with a DIY long-haul on the trip page. We do not sell packages. Price theirs against the New York calculator with your own nights and rooms.
What the weekend costs from the UK

New York is a long-haul spectacle Major, not a short-haul smash-and-grab. The bib is the scarce line; November Midtown rates and the UK–US fare are the ones that move.
Our New York City Marathon estimate uses an indicative £260 bib (partner pages for 2026 list about $358 for non-U.S. residents), £220 a night, and £450 flights. For one runner and one room, four nights is about £1,590 before optional extras. From JFK, AirTrain plus subway reaches Manhattan in about an hour; EWR and LGA also work if the fare is better. A private transfer is worth it after a night flight with kit — or after the race when your legs hate stairs.
Add an ESTA for British passport holders under the Visa Waiver Program. The official application fee is currently $40.27 USD — confirm the live amount before you pay. It is small next to the hotel line, but it is not optional.

Midtown near Central Park suits the finish and bag logistics. The Upper West Side is quieter and equally park-adjacent. Book the room after the confirmation email — and after the card charge clears — not before the draw.

The NYRR Health & Fitness Expo at the Javits Center is where you collect your bib — a proper half-day once you factor in travel and queues. There is no race-day packet pickup. Race morning is a very early ferry or bus to the Staten Island start — follow the published transport instructions exactly. If someone in the group is not racing, Top of the Rock, Liberty, or a Broadway matinee beats dragging a tapering runner across Midtown.
NYC vs other Majors from the UK
If the search was really “how much does a World Marathon Major cost from the UK,” New York sits at the expensive end of the long-hauls. Hotels, not the bib, are usually why.

Charity New York is in the same league as charity London once you convert dollars — often higher than DIY short-haul Majors by several thousand pounds. If the goal is a first overseas marathon without fundraising or jet lag, use the first-overseas guide — New York is a poor first pick even when the finish photo is famous.
The traps that inflate the number
Hotels before the bib is paid. The 2026 drawing charged selected cards on the day. Paying for November Midtown rooms in February and then missing the draw — or watching a declined card forfeit the place — is an expensive non-race.
Two nights when you still have jet lag, the expo, and Staten Island. Five to seven hours west is not a Paris weekend. Squeeze arrival, Javits, and a 04:00 transport call into 48 hours and you pay in alarms instead of an extra night.
Assuming the bib line is the whole trip. $358 is real. So is £880 in hotels on our default four-night assumption, plus the long-haul and ESTA.
Underestimating the charity floor. Partner minima around $3,000–$3,500 (or £3,000 on UK teams) sit on top of registration. Miss the fundraising deadline and many charities charge the shortfall to your card.
Tour-operator certainty tax. Official International Tour Operators exist for a reason. Run the DIY total on the trip page — flights, hotels, and nights — before you buy a bundle because the lottery said no.
9+1 as a “free” UK path. Guaranteed entry via nine qualifying NYRR races plus one volunteer shift in the prior calendar year only works if you can get to New York repeatedly. Count those trips before you treat it as cheaper than charity.
What to do next
If you have a 2026 bib, open the New York City Marathon trip page, set nights to match your actual flight times, price Midtown or Upper West Side hotels, and lock flights into JFK against that total. Book a private transfer if you land jet-lagged with kit. File the ESTA early.
