Best European marathons for a PB

Chasing a marathon PB abroad is a different job from picking a scenic city break. You want a course that doesn’t invent hills, weather that usually cooperates, and logistics you can actually book from the UK without turning race weekend into a second training block.

This is a shortlist, not a lab experiment. The races below are the ones UK runners keep circling for a reason: flat (or close enough), reputable organisation, and a trip that still feels like a trip once the watch stops.

BMW Berlin Marathon

Berlin is the default European PB destination for a reason. It’s a World Marathon Major on a famously fast city course, with elite and age-group times that keep reinforcing the reputation. The catch for UK runners is entry: the main path is usually a draw, with charity, tour-operator, and camp routes if you miss out.

Valencia Marathon Trinidad Alfonso Zurich

Valencia’s own presentation is blunt about the pitch: a completely flat, sea-level course, cool December weather, and a route built for personal bests. It’s a World Athletics Platinum Label race, and the organiser cites Sisay Lemma’s 2:01:48 among its course records.

Entry has tightened in recent years — don’t assume a quiet December open registration; check for ballot or early sell-out. Flights into VLC are straightforward from several UK airports, and the City of Arts and Sciences finish gives the weekend a clear visual anchor — worth pairing with tickets and city extras if you’re not racing every waking hour.

TCS Amsterdam Marathon

Amsterdam sells itself as one of the world’s fastest marathon cities: Olympic Stadium start/finish, a flat loop, Amstel riverside miles, and a World Athletics Platinum Label. The full marathon often sells out; late options may exist via official resale or partner routes — check the organiser first.

Zurich Seville Marathon

Seville is the winter-sun PB option: late-February timing, Andalusian mildness, and a course the organiser markets as among Europe’s flattest big-city marathons. It’s a serious alternative when autumn calendars are full or Berlin/Amsterdam entries don’t land.

Expect demand to be high — recent editions have sold out hard — so watch registration windows, waiting lists, and packages rather than assuming open entry.
