How much does the London Marathon cost?

The London Marathon bib is cheap. The trip is not always cheap, and a charity place is a different number entirely.

For 2027, UK ballot entry is £79.99, or £49.99 if you donated that amount when you applied. That is the figure people mean when they ask “how much does the London Marathon cost” and still miss the weekend. Charity places add a registration fee and a fundraising pledge that, on current 2027 charity pages, sits around £2,500–£2,800.

What “London Marathon cost” actually includes

Three different questions get stuffed into one search.

1. What do I pay the organiser? Ballot or Good For Age: the entry fee. Charity: registration plus the pledge. Tour operator: whatever that package lists.
2. What do I pay to be in London that weekend? Hotels, trains, food, the ExCeL trip, maybe a Tower or river ticket for whoever is not racing.
3. What does a charity place cost me in cash I have to find? The pledge is real money you have to raise or cover. It does not show up as a £75 line on a calculator.

We only answer (1) and (2) with indicative figures. (3) belongs to the charity you sign with.

The 2027 public ballot has already been drawn. If you missed it, the open routes are charity, Good For Age or Championship if you have the time, an authorised tour, or waiting for the next ballot. Do not price a hotel until the bib is confirmed.

International ballot fees are higher and include a travel-offset line. This page is for UK runners; check the official ballot page if you are entering from overseas.

A tour package can look “all-in” until you compare it with a DIY weekend on the trip page. We do not sell packages. Price theirs against the London calculator with your own nights and rooms.

What the weekend costs if you travel

Sleep at home and the extra cost is TfL, expo time, and food. Travel in and the hotel is the story.

Our London Marathon estimate uses an indicative £75 bib and £160 a night. For one runner and one room, three nights is about £555 before optional extras. Rail or Tube is on you; the calculator does not add a flight line for a UK race. The official 2027 UK ballot fee is £79.99, so treat the bib line as rounded, not a quote.

Greenwich or Blackheath is usually kinder on race morning. Westminster and the South Bank are kinder for the finish and for anyone not running. Both spike in April. Book the room after the confirmation email, not before the draw.

London vs a short-haul marathon

If the search was really “how much does a marathon weekend cost,” London is not automatically the cheapest Major. It is the one without a flight.

Those are calculator defaults, not live hotel quotes. Change nights and airport on each page. Valencia 2026 is sold out; Berlin is 27 September 2026.

Charity London sits in a different band. A £2,800 pledge plus a travelling weekend is not a £555 problem. If the goal is a first overseas marathon without fundraising, use the first-overseas guide. If the goal is a time, start with European marathons for a PB.

The traps that inflate the number

Fundraising is not optional on a charity bib. Gift Aid helps the charity. It does not reduce the cash you still have to raise.

Hotels before the bib. Ballot emails come months after you apply. Paying for April rooms in May and then missing the draw is how weekends get expensive and unused.

Two nights when you still have to do ExCeL. Bib collection is at the Docklands expo, not on the heath. Squeeze it into race morning and you will pay in alarms and taxis instead of an extra night.

The Double weekend. Two race days in 2027 means more runners in the same hotel market. If you can stay slightly off the finish, or come in on a Thursday, do that before you “save” money on a last-minute Westminster room.
