Tokyo Marathon cost from the UK

The Tokyo Marathon bib is a Major entry fee. The trip is a long-haul Japan weekend — and that is where UK runners usually feel the number.

For 2027, the organiser’s published overseas participation fee is USD 230 (entry, handling fee, and tax included). Japan residents pay JPY 19,800. Neither figure includes a Shinjuku hotel, a night flight into Haneda, or a charity donation if you take that route.

What “Tokyo Marathon cost” actually includes

Three different questions get stuffed into one search.

1. What do I pay the organiser? Lottery place: USD 230 overseas. Charity: donation plus the same overseas fee. Tour operator or ONE TOKYO GLOBAL package: whatever that bundle lists.
2. What do you pay to be in Tokyo that weekend? Long-haul flights, hotels, food, trains from Haneda or Narita, maybe a food tour or city ticket for whoever is not racing.
3. What does a charity place cost in cash you have to find? The donation is real money you have to raise or cover. It does not replace the flight or the hotel.

We only answer (1) and (2) with indicative figures. (3) belongs to the charity you sign with.

The 2027 general lottery window (14–28 August 2026) has closed. Selection results were posted on My Entry on 18 September 2026; selected overseas runners must pay the USD 230 fee by 5:00 p.m. JST on 30 September 2026 or the place is void. Charity runner applications for 2027 are also closed. If you missed both, the remaining routes are an authorised tour operator (only Kinki Nippon Tourist and its partner agencies can sell packages that include entry), ONE TOKYO GLOBAL membership for a future draw, or waiting for the next lottery. Do not price a March hotel until the bib is confirmed.

Applying to the general lottery itself is free. You pay only if you are selected, within the organiser’s payment window.

A tour package can look “all-in” until you compare it with a DIY long-haul on the trip page. We do not sell packages. Price theirs against the Tokyo calculator with your own nights and rooms.

What the weekend costs from the UK

Tokyo is a long-haul Major, not a short-haul smash-and-grab. The bib is the predictable line; March hotels and the UK–Japan fare are the ones that move.

Our Tokyo Marathon estimate uses an indicative £130 bib (the official 2027 overseas fee is USD 230), £130 a night, and £650 flights. For one runner and one room, four nights is about £1,300 before optional extras. Prefer Haneda (HND) over Narita when the fare is close — the Monorail or Keikyu line reaches central Tokyo in about 20–30 minutes. From Narita, budget 60–90 minutes on the Narita Express. A private transfer is worth it after a night flight with kit; public transport is excellent once you have slept.

Shinjuku puts you walking distance from the Metropolitan Government Building start. Ginza and Marunouchi sit closer to the finish and Tokyo Station. Book the room after the confirmation email — and after you have paid the entry fee — not before the draw.

Thursday–Saturday is expo week for most overseas runners. Packet pickup at Tokyo Big Sight South Exhibition Halls is in person only, with photo ID, and it is not available on race day. Queue, merch, and getting back across town are why four nights beats squeezing collection into a red-eye arrival. If someone in the group is not racing, a food tour or easy city ticket is a better Saturday than dragging a tapering runner across the Yamanote Line.

Tokyo vs other Majors from the UK

If the search was really “how much does a World Marathon Major cost from the UK,” Tokyo sits with the expensive long-hauls. The bib is not what makes it expensive.

Charity Tokyo is still usually cheaper than charity London on the pledges we see (£2,500–£2,800), but it is not a £1,300 problem once the yen donation lands. If the goal is a first overseas marathon without fundraising or jet lag, use the first-overseas guide — Tokyo is a poor first pick even when the course is famous.

The traps that inflate the number

Hotels before the bib is paid. Lottery results come months after you apply. Paying for March Shinjuku rooms before you know you have a place — or before you clear the payment deadline — is an expensive non-race.

Two nights when you still have jet lag and the expo. Eight or nine hours east is not a Valencia weekend. Squeeze arrival, Big Sight, and race morning into 48 hours and you pay in alarms instead of an extra night — and you risk missing packet pickup entirely.

Assuming the bib line is the whole trip. USD 230 is real. So is £520 in hotels on our default four-night assumption, plus the long-haul. An optional Green Mileage donation adds another USD 26 if you opt in at payment.

Tour-operator certainty tax. Only Kinki Nippon Tourist and its partner agencies are authorised to sell packages that include a Tokyo bib. Run the DIY total on the trip page — flights, hotels, and nights — before you buy a bundle because the lottery said no.

Charity that only accepts Japan addresses. Some RUN with HEART programmes do not take overseas applications. For 2027 the charity-runner window is already closed anyway; treat charity as a future-edition path, not a same-year backup from the UK.

What to do next

If you have a 2027 bib (and have paid by the 30 September deadline), open the Tokyo Marathon trip page, set nights to match your actual flight times, price Shinjuku or Ginza hotels, and lock flights into HND against that total. Book a private transfer if you land jet-lagged with kit.
