Athens Marathon weekend: cost and logistics from the UK

The Athens Marathon has two headline entry fees, and UK runners only qualify for the dearer one. The weekend itself is mid-priced for a short-haul marathon. What catches people out is the logistics: a point-to-point course that starts 42 km away in Marathon town, buses that leave central Athens from 05:00, and a bag drop that closes the day before the race.

For 2026, the organiser lists marathon entry at €75 (Advanced level) and €165 (Full level) on athensauthenticmarathon.gr. Runners who are neither citizens nor permanent residents of an EU member state can only enter at the Full level. For most UK runners, the real bib is €165, about £145 once your card converts it. Both levels are sold out for Sunday 8 November 2026. The 25,000 marathon places went in under 36 hours after registration opened on 24 April.

What “Athens Marathon cost” actually includes

Three different questions get stuffed into one search.

1. What do I pay the organiser? €165 at the Full level if you are not an EU citizen or resident, €75 at the Advanced level if you are. A tour operator or charity charges its own price on top of, or instead of, that.
2. What do you pay to be in Athens that weekend? Flights into ATH, hotels near Syntagma, Plaka or Koukaki, food, the €9 airport metro, and probably an Acropolis ticket for whoever is not racing, or for you on Monday.
3. What does a package or charity place cost in cash? That is the operator’s or charity’s number. It rarely includes flights.

We only answer (1) and (2) with indicative figures. Price (3) against your own DIY total before you sign.

Entry for the next edition is simple on paper and hard in practice. All 25,000 marathon places for 2026 went within a day and a half of opening. If you want 2027, watch the organiser’s site from early spring and be ready to pay by card straight after submitting the form. The organiser cancels unpaid registrations.

The organiser’s registration changes and cancellations closed on 25 September 2026. If you do not already have a 2026 bib, a package or a charity place is the realistic way in. Run any “all-in” price against the Athens calculator with your own nights and flights. We do not sell packages.

What the weekend costs from the UK

Athens is a short-haul marathon with long-haul-style logistics on race morning. Flights from the UK are usually the predictable line. November rooms in Plaka and Syntagma are the ones that move, because the marathon, 10K and 5K put tens of thousands of runners in the city on the same weekend.

Our Athens Marathon estimate uses an indicative £145 bib (the official non-EU fee is €165), £100 a night and £130 flights. For one runner and one room, three nights is about £575 before optional extras. From Athens Airport (ATH), Metro Line 3 runs straight to Syntagma in about 40 minutes on a €9 airport ticket (€16 return). Standard city tickets do not cover the airport section. A private transfer earns its money on a late landing or on Monday, when your legs are wrecked.

Syntagma and Plaka put you near the finish and the first-wave bus stops. Koukaki is quieter, usually cheaper and still walkable to the Panathenaic Stadium. Book the room once the bib is confirmed, not while you are still waiting on a package or a charity.

The logistics that shape the budget

The course is a straight line from Marathon town to the Panathenaic Stadium, so the weekend runs on a fixed timetable. Here is how it plays out for 2026, from the official marathon race page.

Expo and bag drop, Wednesday 4 to Saturday 7 November. The Allwyn Marathon Expo is at the Faliro Indoor Hall (the former Tae Kwon Do venue) on the coast. It is a tram or taxi ride from the centre, not a walk. Collect your race pack there, and hand in your clothing bag at the same time. There is no bag collection at the start on race day. On Saturday, race pack collection closes at 20:00 and bag drop at 21:00. This is why three nights beats two.

Race-morning buses, Sunday 8 November. Your start block decides your bus.

• Blocks 1 to 10: buses leave between 05:00 and 06:45 from Syntagma, Omonia, Panepistimio, Evangelismos, Katechaki and Syngrou-Fix. The last bus from Syngrou-Fix leaves at 06:15.
• Blocks 11 to 15: buses leave between 06:30 and 07:45 from Line 3 stations along Mesogeion Avenue (Ethniki Amyna, Cholargos, Katechaki and Nomismatokopio).

The organiser advises against driving yourself. A hotel near Syntagma or a Line 3 station makes the alarm less brutal.

Start blocks and time. Blocks are allocated by your best time from a certified race in 2024–2026, as entered on your form. Leave it blank and you land in one of the last blocks. The first block goes at 08:30. The official indicative table has the last runner over the line at about 10:15. That means later blocks hit the long climb between roughly 10 km and 31 km in the warmest part of the day. November daytime highs in Athens sit around 20°C.

The finish and the 8-hour limit. The time limit is eight hours, with all finishes done by 18:15. Your bag waits at the Zappeion, a short walk from the stadium. The course profile and route detail live on the Athens race page. Train for sustained uphill, not a Berlin profile.

Monday. The Acropolis costs €30 for a timed ticket all year. In November it opens 08:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30. Your bib already gets you into the Acropolis Museum free. A guided Acropolis tour is the one extra most people add. Leave generous margin on the €9 metro back to ATH. Trains run roughly every 30 minutes.

Athens vs other marathon weekends

If the search was really “which autumn marathon should I do from the UK”, Athens sits in the middle of the short-haul pack on cost. It is the only one that finishes in the marble stadium that hosted the first modern Olympics in 1896. It is also the only one where the middle 20 km climb.

Those are calculator defaults, not live hotel quotes. Porto is the cheaper November Sunday if the price is what matters. Athens is not a first-overseas-marathon choice. The early bus, the point-to-point course and the climb are a lot to learn at once. Our first-overseas guide saves it for later for that reason. Once overseas race weekends feel routine, it is one of the most memorable finishes in the sport.

The traps that inflate the number

Budgeting the €75 headline. Unless you hold an EU passport or residency, your bib is €165. The organiser checks eligibility at race pack collection, so a cheaper form filled in wrongly is not a saving.

Two nights with a Saturday landing. The expo is out at Faliro, and race pack collection closes at 20:00 on Saturday. Your bag has to go in there too. A delayed flight turns that into a race to reach the expo before it shuts.

A hotel that suits the finish but not the bus. Plaka is lovely for Sunday evening. The alarm is set by the bus stop for your start block, not the finish line. Check your block and its boarding points before you book.

Leaving the PB box blank. No certified time from 2024–2026 means a late block, a start around 10:00, and the climb in the midday sun.

Paying a package price for a bib you could have had at €165. For 2027, that means being ready when registration opens. Once it sells out, £315 plus a hotel package is the going rate for certainty. Price the DIY version on the trip page, with flights, hotels and nights, before you buy a bundle.

Walking the Acropolis on Saturday. It is uphill and on uneven marble. Save it for Monday, and use the free Acropolis Museum entry on your bib for a gentler Saturday.

What to do next

If you have a 2026 bib, open the Athens Marathon trip page. Set nights to match your flights, price Syntagma, Plaka or Koukaki hotels, and lock flights into ATH against that total. Then check which bus boarding points serve your start block.
