The course

Starts in the town of Marathon and follows the legendary route to Athens, finishing in the marble Panathenaic Stadium. A tough, mostly uphill middle section from 10km to 31km rewards you with a fast downhill finish.

Where to stay

Syntagma and Plaka put you near the finish and the metro; Koukaki is a quieter base within walking distance of the stadium.

Getting there

From Athens Airport (ATH) the metro Line 3 reaches Syntagma in about 40 minutes; official buses ferry runners out to the Marathon start on race morning.

That weekend

Collect your bib at the marathon expo, jog a shakeout by the stadium, then explore the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and the Acropolis Museum.

Sample 4-day trip

Arrive, explore, race, then head home. A proper weekend, not a rushed fly-by.

  1. Day 1: Arrive

Fly into Athens (ATH). Metro Line 3 reaches Syntagma in about 40 minutes. Public transport works well into the centre. Book a private transfer for late arrivals.

Check into Syntagma, Plaka, or Koukaki near the Panathenaic Stadium finish. Keep the evening easy: this course has a serious uphill middle.

  2. Day 2: Shakedown Run and Explore the City

Collect your bib at the Athens Marathon expo . Jog a very easy shakeout by the marble stadium.

Book Acropolis tickets if you want a fixed plan, but keep walking modest. Official race buses to Marathon town on race morning are part of the logistics: read the instructions carefully.

  3. Day 3: Race Day

Take the organiser bus to Marathon town for the legendary start. There is no sensible public transport alternative for most runners. The uphill stretch from 10 km to 31 km is the challenge; the finish into the Panathenaic Stadium is the reward.

Celebrate nearby in Plaka with a simple Greek meal. Keep the evening short: you have earned the stadium moment.

  4. Day 4: Final Day

If the flight allows, the Acropolis at a stroll or a slow Agora wander still fits. Metro Line 3 back to ATH works, but leave generous margin. A private transfer is easier on marathon legs.

Three nights covers expo, the bus out to Marathon, and a calm exit.
