The route

The Neapolis Marathon is 42.2 km (26.2 miles). Start and finish are both on Piazza del Plebiscito in central Naples. The FIDAL-measured road course loops the historic centre and waterfront — organisers flag Castel dell’Ovo, Piazza del Plebiscito, and the Maschio Angioino (Castel Nuovo) as the highlight stretches. Multiple city loops, smooth asphalt, and a 6-hour cut-off. Confirm the year’s map on the official site before you lock a hotel for walking distance.

Start time

08:00 from Piazza del Plebiscito (18 Oct 2026). Assembly from about 07:00. Confirm wave details on the race-day page.

Course elevation

Marketed as a flat, fast city course on smooth roads through UNESCO heritage Naples. Expect short undulations on waterfront and centro loops rather than a sustained climb — not Athens, closer to a scenic sea-level city loop. Train for warm October mornings and crowd density on the loops.

Entry fee

Indicative entry is £70 per runner. Confirm the current bib price on the official site; ballot, charity, and tour prices can differ. 2026 marathon entry tiers on the official site: €60 until 29 Mar, €70 until 30 Aug, €80 until 4 Oct, €90 at the Neapolis Marathon Village. £70 here tracks the late online band; early birds pay less. Half marathon and Sea Run (≈11–12 km) share the weekend at lower fees.

Registration

Open online entry via the official Neapolis Marathon site until 4 Oct 2026 (village price after). Competitive runners need World Athletics / foreign federation membership or a FIDAL Runcard plus the Italian competitive medical certificate; non-competitive runners register and upload the liability waiver. Bibs transfer free until 4 Oct; no refunds after purchase. Bib pickup at the Neapolis Marathon Village on Piazza del Plebiscito — Friday 16 and Saturday 17 Oct, 10:00–19:00 (limited Sunday morning pickup only on request).

Where to stay

For Naples Marathon hotels, prioritise a walk to Piazza del Plebiscito: Chiaia, Toledo / Piazza Trieste e Trento, and the waterfront edge of Centro Storico keep race morning on foot and put you near San Carlo and Via Toledo. Quartieri Spagnoli is lively and often cheaper — accept steeper streets and a short walk. Santa Lucia / Castel dell’Ovo hotels trade quiet sea views for a longer stroll along Via Partenope. Vomero is cooler and quieter with funicular or Metro Line 1 down; budget extra time on race morning. Book after the bib is confirmed — mid-October race weekend near Plebiscito fills early.

Getting there

Fly into Naples Capodichino (NAP). The Alibus shuttle reaches Piazza Garibaldi or the port in about 15–20 minutes to Piazza Garibaldi (longer to the port); from Garibaldi take Metro Line 1 toward Municipio / Toledo for the Plebiscito area. A taxi or private transfer is simpler with race kit. October mornings are usually mild — still pack a throwaway layer for the 08:00 gun.

That weekend

Collect your bib at the Neapolis Marathon Village on Piazza del Plebiscito, then an easy lungomare shakeout past Castel dell’Ovo. Pizza in Spaccanapoli, Cappella Sansevero or MANN if legs allow, and a ferry day-trip to Capri or the archaeological circuit (Pompeii / Herculaneum) once you have the medal — keep big climbs for after race day.

Who it's for

For UK runners who want a short-haul October marathon with UNESCO streets and a seafront stretch, not a Major ballot. Suits a flat-ish city PB attempt if heat stays kind, or a culture-first weekend with pizza and Pompeii around the race. Competitive entry needs federation paperwork or a Runcard; tourist/non-competitive is simpler with a waiver. Skip it if you need guaranteed English everywhere at expo, hate multi-loop city courses, or want guaranteed cool Nordic weather.

Sample 4-day trip

Arrive, explore, race, then head home. A proper weekend, not a rushed fly-by.

  1. Day 1: Arrive

Fly into Naples (NAP). The Alibus reaches Piazza Garibaldi or the port in about 15–20 minutes to Piazza Garibaldi (about 35 minutes to the port); Metro Line 1 continues toward Toledo / Municipio for the Plebiscito area. Public transport works for most runners. A private transfer helps with late flights or awkward bags.

Check into Chiaia, Toledo, or Centro Storico near Piazza del Plebiscito . Keep the evening easy — pizza nearby beats climbing Vomero on arrival legs.

  2. Day 2: Shakedown Run and Explore the City

Collect your bib at the Neapolis Marathon Village on Piazza del Plebiscito (Friday or Saturday, 10:00–19:00). Jog an easy shakeout along Via Partenope past Castel dell’Ovo — flat, short, not race pace.

Wander Spaccanapoli or book a historic-centre / underground tour only if you want a fixed plan. Save Pompeii for after the marathon unless you race Sunday and fly Monday with energy left.

  3. Day 3: Race Day

Start and finish are on Piazza del Plebiscito at 08:00. From Chiaia or Toledo hotels, walk to the square. Arrive early for bag drop — only small bags with the bib sticker. The course loops UNESCO streets and the waterfront; look for Castel dell’Ovo and the Maschio Angioino.

Afterwards, celebrate with pizza nearby and keep walking light. Skip a big late night after 42 km in October warmth.

  4. Day 4: Final Day

If the flight allows, a gentle Pompeii morning or coffee on the lungomare still fits. Metro and Alibus back to NAP are straightforward — leave margin after 42 km, or book a transfer to the airport .

Three nights covers village, race, and a calm exit without limping through security.

What drives the cost

Entry is modest next to hotels and flights — the calculator is bib plus flight plus hotel. The lever is a Plebiscito-side room on race weekend; Quartieri Spagnoli or Vomero can pull the nightly rate down if you accept a longer race-morning commute. NAP is usually predictable short-haul from the UK. Three nights covers village pickup, race day, and a calm exit (or a recovery Pompeii morning). Cut paid tours first if the hotel quote is the shock; pizza and lungomare walks do a lot without the Viator line.
