The route
The Great Wall half is 21.1 km (13.1 miles), not the 42.2 km marathon. It starts and finishes at Yin and Yang Square in the Huangyaguan valley and climbs onto the wall on gravel, asphalt, and bricks. Same weekend as the full; fewer kilometres, still a serious trail half.
Course elevation
Hilly trail with wall steps. The full marathon lists 1,282 m of gain; the half is shorter but is not a road PB. Confirm the current half profile on the official route map.
Entry fee
Indicative entry is £550 per runner. Confirm the current bib price on the official site; ballot, charity, and tour prices can differ. International runners buy an organiser tour package, not a cheap standalone half bib. The published regional package (from USD 790 for 2027) covers a short stay and race entry for any distance. Confirm current package prices on the official site.
Registration
You must book the organiser package to race. Registration for 2027 is open; a USD 150 late fee applies after 15 March 2027, and booking closes 15 April 2027. Distance can be changed up to 10 days before the race, or after the inspection-day briefing, but not on race day. Minimum age for the half is 16.
Where to stay
Most runners book the organiser's package hotels near Huangyaguan; independent travellers often base in central Beijing before transferring out. DIY logistics to this wall section are hard: plan around the package.
Getting there
Fly into Beijing (PEK or PKX), then it is roughly a 3-hour coach transfer to the Huangyaguan section of the wall, usually arranged within the race package.
That weekend
The event includes a compulsory course inspection day; extend your trip for the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and Mutianyu wall sections in Beijing. Same festival as the full marathon.
Who it's for
The wall weekend without 42 km: 21.1 km at Huangyaguan, same organiser package and inspection day as the full. For UK runners who want the steps and the villages and do not need a marathon recovery, or who are travelling with someone on the full. Not a PB: trail, climbs, heat (the organiser cites around 28°C). Skip it if you wanted a cheap city half you can fly into and race from a hotel.
Sample 4-day trip
Arrive, explore, race, then head home. A proper weekend, not a rushed fly-by.
-
Day 1: Arrive
Fly into Beijing (PEK or PKX). Most UK runners book the organiser package , which includes the coach transfer to Huangyaguan (~3 hours). Public transport to the wall section is not practical for race weekend.
If your package includes Beijing nights first, check into central Beijing and keep the evening gentle. Independent DIY logistics to Huangyaguan are hard: plan around the package.
-
Day 2: Shakedown Run and Explore the City
Transfer to the Huangyaguan valley per your package schedule . Longer packages include a compulsory course inspection on the steps: treat it as part of the race, not a tourist stroll.
If you are still in Beijing, use the day for Forbidden City or Mutianyu trips before the coach out. Lay out trail shoes and hydration: this is 21.1 km on the wall, not a city half.
-
Day 3: Race Day
Starts and finishes at Yin and Yang Square. Half-marathon bibs are red and carry a wave number; go to that wave. The course uses gravel, asphalt, and bricks, with climbs onto the wall. Cut-off is 8 hours for all distances.
Celebrate with your package group. Most runners stay in organiser hotels near the course. There is no pop-out for public transport mid-race.
-
Day 4: Final Day
Coach back to Beijing per your package. If time allows, one more wall or city visit before the long flight home.
Four nights reflects the package shape: Beijing, transfer, race, return. Budget for the organiser coach and compulsory inspection, not DIY trains.
What drives the cost
The package is the cost, not a £30 half bib. Flights into Beijing dominate for UK runners; the calculator’s four-night hotel line is a DIY buffer on top of whatever the organiser bundle includes. Confirm whether your package already covers Huangyaguan nights so you do not double-count. Late entry after 15 March 2027 adds USD 150. Mutianyu or Forbidden City extras sit outside the race bundle.
